Dr. Avital Mendelson Receives National Blood Foundation Grant
LFKRI's Dr. Avital Mendelson was awarded National Blood Foundation (NBF) funding through NBF Scientific Research Grants Program. The NBF, a program of AABB, serves the fields of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies through grant making, educational offerings, and industry leadership engagement and recognition. The grant totaling $75,000 awarded to Dr. Mendelson is entitled “A Biomimetic Niche for Platelet Formation In Vitro” and aims to develop novel methods to promote platelet production ex-vivo. Dr. Mendelson will investigate candidate hematopoietic support cells, also known as “niche cells” that may promote the production of platelets from precursor cells and also to develop a novel bioreactor to further enhance platelet production.
