NYBC Update for Hospital Customers Regarding Coronavirus
Dear Valued Customer,
We would like to provide you with an update on the precautions we are taking in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. New York Blood Center works hard to maintain an inventory of blood and blood products consistent with your hospital's needs. During this time of uncertainty we will need your help in managing the blood supply.
In anticipation of cancellations of upcoming blood drives, we are seeking to increase our collections and double the blood reserves now so that we can prevent future shortages. See our public press release here.
We are taking aggressive action across our enterprise in order to reach this goal:
- We are actively engaging with media to encourage people to continue donating and to reassure them that donating blood is safe. (See attached press release)
- We have communicated with the chair people who run our blood drives about importance of continuing to hold blood drives and continuing to schedule drives in the months ahead.
- Keeping NYBC staff safe and healthy is a key priority and we are encouraging everyone to follow standard guidelines for infection control, including routine hand washing and staying home if they are experiencing symptoms of a respiratory infection.
As we continue to increase our collections, we ask that you collaborate with us and share information about elements of your COVID-19 protocol that affect blood use and we encourage you to closely monitor your usage to ensure you are using the oldest inventory first.
Most importantly, please encourage everyone in your institutions to donate blood, consider hosting a blood drive to make up for those that are being cancelled, and help us amplify this call to action via your social media and digital channels.
We appreciate your understanding during this time. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide you with regular updates.
