Can I Donate Blood?

As a blood donor, you are a vital part of a team of individuals working together to save the lives of hospital patients in our area. Most people qualify as blood donors, even if they are taking medications.

Basic Requirements to Donate Blood

Donating blood is safe and convenient when you are:

  • In good health
  • 17 years or older (16 with a parent or guardian’s written consent)
  • To ensure the ongoing health of our generous donors, we ask all donors age 76 or above to provide a one-time doctor’s note confirming they are in good health and eligible to continue donating blood. This is your friendly reminder to check in with your physician and, if you donate at a New York-based donor center or blood drive, request a note to bring to your next donation. This note will remain on file with New York Blood Center as your proof of eligibility to donate.
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds (Donors aged 16-18 have additional height and weight restrictions)
  • Antibiotics (except antibiotics for acne) if taken for infection, accept after last dose provided donor meets all other criteria.
  • Symptom-free for at least 72 hours following cold or flu

Some medical conditions/medications, recent tattoos, piercings, or travel may impact eligibility. Learn more about common reasons people can’t donate.
