The New York Blood Center, along with NYP Hospitals, has been awarded a contract from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to serve as one of 4 domestic hubs for The Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation-IV-Pediatric (REDS-IV-Pediatric) Research Program. This program which builds upon prior REDS programs, will take a vein to vein (donor to recipient) approach in performing epidemiologic studies designed to better understand the collection, processing and clinical effects (safety and efficacy) of blood products spanning from neonates to adult patients.
Dr. Bruce Sachais, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer serves as the co-PI of the HUB and leads the team at NYBC. He directs the NY HUB along with Dr. Eldad Hod (NYP, Columbia) who serves at the HUB PI. The 7.4 million dollar contract spans 7 years provides resources to established researchers for performance of epidemiological studies in transfusion medicine, but also provides support for the training of the next generation of researchers in our field.
