New York Blood Center Enterprises, like all non-profits, relies on financial contributions and philanthropic donations in order to continue the life-saving work its nine divisions do every day. NYBCe offers a variety of blood products, educational opportunities, and industry services — all of which benefit from monetary donations provided by caring community members.
Whether you’ve given to NYBCe before or are planning to give for the first time, here’s a closer look at where your donation dollars are going and how they help NYBCe serve communities on a local, national, and international scale.
Every day, NYBCe provides vital blood products and patient services. Healthcare doesn’t rest, so the organization’s blood centers function 24/7, 365 days a year. Together, New York Blood Center, Community Blood Center, Memorial Blood Center, Nebraska Community Blood Bank, and Rhode Island Blood Center work to provide blood and blood products to over 75 million patients and more than 500 hospitals annually.
With a mission and operation of this size, NYBCe has a significant responsibility — and a significant need. Your generous contributions can help the non-profit offset the costs of its daily expenses.
Investigators from NYBCe’s Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute are working hard to turn research findings into blood-related products, techniques, and therapies that improve outcomes for patients around the world. In the organization’s 50 year history, LFKRI has published more than 4,000 scholarly articles on transfusion medicine, hematology, infectious disease, epidemiology, and cell therapy in scientific journals.
The research done at LFKRI is cutting-edge, and financial contributions keep it that way.
In 2020, NYBCe and LFKRI have pivoted certain resources in order to join the fight against COVID-19 and contribute to the global bank of knowledge on the virus. These efforts have culminated in the creation of a COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) collection program and the COVID-19 Research Repository (CRR).
CCP is an investigational therapy for COVID-19 in which convalescent plasma is collected from a patient who has recently recovered from coronavirus and is then given to individuals with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. CCP contains antibodies that may help the infected person’s immune system clear the virus faster. NYBCe has collected 76,000 units of CCP and distributed more than 62,000 units as of November 30, 2020.
The COVID-19 Research Repository, on the other hand, is an effort spearheaded by NYBCe President and CEO, Dr. Christopher D. Hillyer, and LFKRI investigator Dr. Larry Luchsinger. This initiative seeks to not only increase the Enterprise’s repertoire of CCP samples but also spreadhead COVID-19 research and vaccination trials. Currently, the CRR has two SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and adjuvant candidates in the pre-clinical phase.
NYBCe requires monetary support to continue operating their CCP collection program and fund ground-breaking research on COVID-19. Donations to the COVID-19 General Fund help the non-profit increase capacity and supply of CCP, fund operational expenses, and conduct antibody/ serology testing. Donations to the COVID-19 Vaccine Development, on the other hand, allow NYBCe to conduct and complete more vaccine trials and quickly overcome regulatory challenges.
In addition to their blood products, ground-breaking research, and COVID-19 response efforts, NYBCe also has the capacity to provide top-quality transfusion services and highly specialized patient care. Their professional and medical staff work closely with the hospitals with which they partner to secure better treatment options, which in turn improves patient outcomes. These treatments include bone marrow, transfusion services, cellular therapy, and hemophilia services.
With the help of your philanthropic donations, NYBCe is able to increase patients’ access to vital treatments and medical services.
The mission of NYBCe extends far beyond collecting and delivering life-saving blood and blood products to patients in need. They are also committed to educating, inspiring, and empowering those interested in transfusion medicine, cell therapy, and other related fields.
While many of NYBCe’s educational opportunities are for medical students and trained healthcare professionals, the Little Doctors Program™ is focused on the next generation — elementary and middle school students. This program gives children the chance to design and organize a blood drive. In turn, they learn about blood science as well as the importance of blood donation and community service.
Philanthropy plays a vital role in NYBCe’s ability to host the Little Doctors Program™ and create the “blood donors of the future.”
For medical students and trained healthcare professionals, NYBCe offers a multitude of educational opportunities. For example, the organization hosts events like the annual Alexander S. Wiener Lecture and the upcoming Essentials of Transfusion Medicine webinar series. NYBCe also provides scholarships for world-class training and offers a variety of P.A.C.E.-accredited courses on blood banking, physician training, blood center tours, clinical rotations, and medical consultations at their different divisions.

They support hundreds of hospitals, have thousands of employees, and have served over 75 million patients.
