June 19th is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

Chanel Rice Purnell is the Founder and President of the Sickle Cell Empowerment Initiative, Inc. (SCEI), a Brooklyn-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by sickle cell disease, a cause that is deeply personal to her, as she lives with the condition herself.

As someone living with sickle cell disease, this work is deeply personal to me. Blood transfusions are not optional, they are essential for survival for so many in our community. This blood drive is about more than awareness, it’s about action, community, and making sure our voices and needs are seen, heard, and supported.
